The FreeBSD Corporate Networker's Guide

Static vs Dynamic

In the Networker's Guide, I strongly advocate for dynamic assignment of TCP/IP numbers, but a few reviewers pointed out that many UNIX apps like X Windows are still tied to fixed IP numbers. NFS has this problem too. I agree with this, but the audience of the book is that of admins moving from a TCP/IP Windows environment--which generally has no static IP numbering dependencies--to a mixed UNIX/Windows environment--which may have some static IP number dependencies. Simply put, most nets in this transition are going to run into problems with fixed IP number requirements only with rather advanced UNIX apps, which they probably won't get into until much later in the migration, in which case they can make a decision of whether they want to scrap DHCP or not. Most production TCP/IP nets are a mixture of static and DHCP, with static assignments used where they have to be, and DHCP used where it can be.
