The FreeBSD Corporate Networker's Guide

Bind 4 Obsolete

A reviewer pointed out that BIND version 4 is obsolete and BIND 8 is now the standard and I should not use BIND 4 syntax in the chapter. I show both syntaxes because someone working on migrating an older UNIX system to a current FreeBSD system might run across an old nameserver.

It should be emphasized that BIND 4 should never be used on a brand new production nameserver that is being installed. Further, nobody should ever bring a public nameserver online who doesen't own--or who hasn't read--a copy of the O'Reilly DNS and BIND book.

This chapter serves to provide needed background information but should not be considered the only thing that you need to bring up a nameserver.
