The FreeBSD Corporate Networker's Guide

Booting the FreeBSD installer

Several reviewers said to not waste type on discussing on a floppy install and to recommend that anyone installing FreeBSD just boot from the CD-ROM.

This is fine advice if a person is running PC hardware that's less than 2 years old. However, older hardware sometimes has problems booting from a CD, as does newer hardware with older SCSI hardware, such as some of the cheaper PCI SCSI cards.

I didn't want the text tied to the expectation that everyone will have a PC capabable of booting from a CD. PCs are universally bootable from floppy disks, so why look for trouble? There are references in the text to booting from the CD and the readers can try it out if they want.
