The FreeBSD Corporate Networker's Guide

Xhost security

A reviewer said that it would be better to issue the command xhost /bin/hostname to set up X security, instead of the more general xhost + that I list in the text.

This is true. However the problem I have found is that when using X between different UNIXs, such as Solaris and FreeBSD, setting up the security properly according to the manual sometimes doesen't work. xhost + basically turns off security completely. For testing this is better because then if things don't work, you at least can rule out security problems. Of course, later on it's important to apply security, if at the least to prevent interference from pranksters in your organization.
