The FreeBSD Corporate Networker's Guide

Updating Sendmail

A reviewer pointed out that instead of the manual compilation instructions given for updating Sendmail, it would be better to do a cvsup followed by a make world. This would pull the current version, which is customized for FreeBSD, directly from the FreeBSD master archive site.

The reviewer has an extremely valid point. Doing a make world is something that not only works well for Sendmail, but it works for Bind and other important utilities also. In fact, in the shipping version of FreeBSD 4.2 Release (the version shipped on the CD-ROM) the BIND supplied has a security hole and can ONLY be corrected this way. (Note: this is only important if you are running a nameserver on the mailserver.) I elected not to mention this here because I hadn't covered doing a make world elsewhere in the book.
