Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a free copy of the book?

Occasionally I am asked if I can supply a free copy of the book. While it may surprise many people, authors don't get an incredibly large number of free copies of their books when they are published, and I've already used up mine. For some reason, my relatives all wanted free copies--go figure!

Seriously, now that the book is out of print, the publisher has no more stock to give out, even if they were to inclined to give it out for free.

Publishers and authors in general do not give out books for free. They are in business to make money and do so by selling, not giving. However if you can show to the publisher that you may assist them in selling their books, they are much more inclined to giving you something for your effort. Some of the things publishers look for are:

  • You are a bookseller thinking of ordering some copies to sell
  • You are a teacher/instructor/professor looking to evaluate the book for use in a course of study
  • You write a review of the book and publish it in a paper article in a periodical or an on-line venue that has significant FreeBSD or computer-related traffic
If you fall under one of these three categories, then let me know and I'll get your name sent to the appropriate person at the publisher. Don't be discouraged in asking publishers for free books - they are out there, and you just have to put forth a little effort.
