The FreeBSD Corporate Networker's Guide

Frequently Asked Questions

I installed the FreeBSD 4.2 from the included CD-ROM, and when the system rebooted it froze with the message: "Generating DSA parameter and key."

You must have installed FreeBSD on a 486/66 or lower because the faster Pentium class systems don't do this. The system actually isn't frozen; it is running a one-time process that creates the system secure certificate for use with the program ssh. Generating these keys is CPU-intensive and takes a long time--three minutes on a 486/50 is not uncommon, with longer times on slower CPUs. Once the key is generated, the system will write it out to a file and then subsequent boots will not halt during the boot process like this.

Note that you can turn off ssh during installation. When you are asked for any last changes, go into the startup settings and remove the X from "start sshd.

FreeBSD version 4.2 is the first version with ssh turned on by default.
